Kurt Vonnegut Essay -- Essays Papers

Kurt VonnegutKurt Vonnegut, junior is a contemporary American author whose works have been described by Richard Giannone as comic masks covering the tragic farce that is our contemporary life (Draper, 3784). Vonneguts life has had a number of significant influences on his works. Influences from his personal philosophy, his life and generates, and his family be evident elements in his works. Among his comic masks are three novels Cats Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, and God sign on You, Mr. Rosewater. Throughout these novels, elements such as attitude, detail, narrative technique, setting, and theme can be viewed with more understanding when related to certain aspects of his life. These correlations are best examined in terms of each influence. One of the most significant influences from Vonneguts life on his personal philosophy has been his participation in World war II. During the war, Vonnegut served in the American army in Europe and was captured by German soldiers. As a prison er of war, he witnessed the Allied bombing of the city of Dresden, in which more than 135,000 tribe died due to the resulting fires (Draper, 3785). This experience had a profound impact on Vonnegut. From it, he developed his existential personal philosophy and his ideas about the evils of technology. He states, I am the enemy of all technological progress that threatens mankind (Nuwer, 39). The influence of Dresden shows up in each of the novels. In Cats Cradle, one element of his experience at Dresden that Vonnegut portrays is his fear of technology. Initially, the intention of the story is for the narrator to write about what the scientists who invented the atomic bomb were doing the day it was dropped on Hiroshima. To this effect, one of the scientists in the story said, skill has now known sin, to which another replied, What is sin? (Vonnegut, Cradle, 21). The focus on technology quickly changes to a material called ice-nine, which has the ability to freeze water at path temp erature. This technological breakthrough, by a scientist who worked on developing the atomic bomb, has the ability to destroy the world by freezing all its water. Even though the people with ice-nine are very careful all through the plot, they lose control of it in the end and the world becomes frozen. In their own worlds, th ey set about been neglected, abused, bullied, or even ignored by both their families and their other friends. Throughout the movie they realize that although they may seem completely different on the outside, on the inside they are all experiencing the same things. Although this movie is twenty plus years old, the themes of commonalty is still true today.It speaks directly to young people. Kids/Students are still trying to find their way and fit in. The characters of The Breakfast Club makes the audience think, learn, and grow. The film shows that people are wasting time hating someone they dont know. It shows that if you take time to get to know someone, you may find they are more like you than you thought. You may find empathy for them, and you may find you can learn from them. You may even find that you like them. A reviewer at Reel. com called the movie almost quaint in its line drawing of disaffected high school students. That is true parts of the movie is dated. If it was m ade today, Clare would have a baby. John would have done time for gang activity. Andrew, the jock would be on steroids. Brian and the kid who was beat up by Andrew would have formed the Trench Coat Mafia, and the flare gun in the locker would have been an assault rifle. Allison would not have even made it into the movie because she would have hung herself in her bedroom pressure waiting to be discovered. Later teen flicks adjusted to the growing sophistication of teenage sensibility.This movie had a message of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding.
